Engineering jobs in BCEngineering jobs

Unlike in some countries, engineering in Canada is regulated by provincial laws and national standards. As an engineer, you are legally responsible for your work and the engineering work of others you supervise. So if you wish to do the work defined as engineering in Canada or use the title “Engineer”, you must :

  • be registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in the province or territory in which you are working;
    or
  • work under the direct supervision of someone who is registered as a Professional Engineer in the province or territory in which you are working.

In BC, the “Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia” (APEGBC) registers engineers.

APEGBC has been running a pilot project looking at ways of improving the opportunities for internationally trained engineers (amongst other things). One of the results promised from this is a self-assessment tool for international engineers to assess their qualifications. This will eventually be on their site: here.

Most engineers in BC work in private companies such as consulting firms, construction firms, manufacturers and processing companies. Engineering positions are also found in local government, Crown Corporation and provincial government offices.

Note that each province regulates it’s own engineers so you cannot move from one province to another without re-registering. (This applies to a lot of things from driving licenses onwards!)
